Abie Loy Kemarre Biography and CV

View Abie Loy Kemarre's paintings

Abie Loy Kemarre is an exciting and dynamic young artist who dramatically entered the art world with her early success in Europe and the USA. Born in 1972, Abie is an Eastern Anmatyerre speaker from Mosquito Bore, Utopia, Northern Territory. She is the eldest of five children raised by their mother, Margaret Loy, who is also a painter of note, and her father, Ray Loy Pwerle.

Abie grew up in a family of artists. From when she was five to seventeen years old, her mother, Margaret, and her grandmother, Kathleen Petyarre, were often busy producing batik and the township was regularly festooned with wildly coloured silk blowing in the wind. When Kathleen Petyarre and her sisters Gloria, Violet and Ada Bird Petyarre began painting on linen at nearby Delmore Gallery in April 1989, Abie was there, avidly learning the stories and watching her family members begin to produce the works of art that would soon make them famous. Abie was keen to try her hand at painting, but it was not until 1994 at the age of 22 that she asked for her first canvas from Delmore Gallery.

The Holts sent Abie’s work to selected galleries in Europe and the USA and to show certain dealers in Melbourne and Sydney. She was selected as a finalist in the Telstra Art awards in 1997 and again in 2001. Abie’s work was collected by the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne; the Art Gallery of South Australia and The Kerry Stokes Collection, Perth. In the USA, she was collected by The Kelton Foundation, The Levi-Kaplan Foundation and the Seattle Art Museum. In Europe, she was collected by The Musee de Confluences, Lyon, France and the Foundation Colas Paris, France, and in Japan by The Ishibashi Foundation, Bridgestone Museum, Tokyo.

Both Abie and her grandmother Kathleen painted almost exclusively for Delmore until 1999 when they both began to spend more time interstate. Between many interstate trips they both continued to visit Delmore to paint whenever they returned to Utopia. Abie now travels between Mosquito bore, Adelaide bore and Lake Nash (Alpurrurulam). Abie is one of the most successful of the younger, mid-career artists at Utopia and Delmore Gallery is proud to present a collection of Abie Loy Kemarre’s art for sale.
