Maisie Bundey Petyarre Biography and CV

Maisie Bundey Petyarre

DATE OF BIRTH:  1949

REGION:  Utopia

LANGUAGE GROUP:  Eastern Anmatyerre

Maisie Bundey, intermittently painting for Delmore Gallery since 1989, has always strived to have a different style to others who paint the same country and story. Her work is linked in style to her foundational experience in making batik, and the fluid and colourful liberation that this technique allows. The low incidence of dotting within her work is her most defining characteristic and allows for unique depictions of plants and ceremonies that are significant to her. Maisie works by layering colours varying from fuchsia pinks to pastels, developing her own textured, magnified interpretation of the yam seed (kame), and women's ceremonial body paint (awelye). Her "Bush Tucker" works are painted versions of the classic Utopia batik style and are from the perspective of looking down at a ground covered in growth, with significant foods to gather and celebrate.
