Susie Petyarre Biography and CV

Susie Petyarre

Born in 1966 in Irrultja, Utopia, Susie Petyarre started painting at Delmore in April 1989 and was initially influenced by early, powerful ceremonial paintings by Lily Sandover Kngwarreye. In the last few years Susie and her younger sisters, Annie and Jessie Petyarreand their niece Genella Kngwarreyehave created their own style, applying the paint through fine needles.

Susie paints exquisite fine lined works, braided with meticulous threads of paint, depicting her abstract interpretation of the flora, including the Honey Grevillea, near the sacred women's cave, Enteebra, in the heart of her Alyawarre country. Enteebra is a sacred women's site on Utopia where Alyawarre women, Petyarre and Kngwarreye, gather to renew and perform their ceremonies.

Susie's brother, Sandy Hunter Petyarre, is also an artist and her mother, Molly Pwerle, is the sister of celebrated painter, Minnie Pwerle
