View Gracie Pwerle's paintings

DATE OF BIRTH:  1956

REGION:  Utopia

LANGUAGE GROUP:  Alyawarre

Gracie Pwerle has been an active Utopia artist since the 80s, participating in early batik workshops and CAAMA’s Utopia Women's Paintings, the First Works on Canvas, A Summer Project, 1988-89. Her work is included in international collections as well as the Holmes à Court Collection.

Gracie’s central Dreaming is anwekety or bush plum; her fine dot work representing the sweet dark conkerberry in all its life cycle, throughout which the colour of the berry changes. The plant produces white flowers and berries, which when ripe, are edible and sweet to taste. The berries also feed a variety of wildlife including emus, bush turkey and other native bird species.

Gracie’s paintings, whilst focusing in on flora, simultaneously provide a topographical view of the landscape of her Country, Alhalkere, and always have a distinct sense of movement, moving your eye across the landscape.
